Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Selects Lennox Hearth Products Fireplace to Warm Up Home of Texas Hero

Dallas, TX — In 2007, Carlton Marshall, a member of the Dallas Police Department SWAT team, was shot in the neck while serving a narcotics search warrant. Severe spinal cord damage was immediate, followed by hearing loss and a stroke. Although rehabilitation has restored some of his mobility, Carlton is still primarily confined to a wheelchair. His young daughter, Jessica, began having seizures about a month after Carlton was severely wounded.

For an episode that will air Sunday, October, 18, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” traveled to Lancaster, Texas, to meet Carlton; his wife Susan, a homicide detective; and their children, and then proceeded to rebuild their home in a seven-day span. The team, led by Cheldan Homes, created a renovated space that solved rampant structural and accessibility issues, including snake infestation, a sinking foundation, and a septic system that backed up on their lawn. While the team of hundreds of workers and volunteers rebuilt the home, the Marshall family vacationed at Disneyland.

“For Carlton’s needs, we really had to gut the house and start over. He uses a wheelchair almost all of the time and that made it important to widen every hallway, doorway and room in the house,” said Joey Goss of Cheldan Homes. “When you add on the issues with the foundation, we really had nowhere else to go but to take it all the way down and start over. The advantage of that, though, was that we got to give them lots of additional amenities like upgraded cabinetry and a new fireplace that was donated by Lennox Hearth Products.”

The Lennox Elite™ Series TM-4500 traditional wood-burning fireplace, located in the new family room with soaring cathedral ceilings, features a luxurious custom-built masonry appearance at an affordable price. This generous 45-inch-wide opening with a two-foot chamber depth makes a grand impression while its design allows for easy installation and minimal clearance requirements. Its rugged brick-patterned interior allows expansive fires that add radiant beauty to even the largest rooms.

“No family could be more deserving of this home makeover than the Marshalls. Despite all the challenges they’ve faced, they plan to continue supporting an amazing nonprofit program called Therapeutic Riding of Texas (TROT). The Marshalls hope to modify their horse barn and stables to host TROT sessions, which would also be helpful to Carlton in his physical therapy program,” said Perry Moore, of Overhead Door Company of Ft. Worth, the Lennox dealer that was asked to contribute to the project. “Our part in this was just one way we can say ‘thank you’ to a real hero and his family.”
